Fall always makes me want to talk about books. Of course, so do the other three seasons, but there’s something especially appealing about settling in with a good story when the evenings start getting longer.
Here in Texas, we may have to supply our own chilly atmosphere with the air conditioner for a while yet.
Right now, I’m reading Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers, a gift from my writer friend Carolyn Greene. There’s a particular pleasure in reading a book a friend has chosen for you. You get the story, but you also get to think of the person who put it in your hands.
It’s a fun mystery about found family, and that combination appeals to me. Come for the murder, stay for the people finding their way into one another’s lives.
Found family is one of my favorite things to encounter in a story. People who begin as strangers gradually become the ones who notice when someone’s missing, pull up another chair, or get involved whether they’ve been invited to or not. Add a mystery, and I’m happily turning pages.
Thank you, Carolyn, for the gift—and for giving me a book to share with my readers as we head into fall.
What are you reading these days? Has a friend ever given you a book that turned out to be just what you wanted?
With love,
Lori
